Foodbank community garden

When Foodbank took the opportunity to move premises to the airport estate in May 2015, the chance to evolve their Community Garden also grew. ADCO Constructions was appointed to build the new Foodbank office/warehouse and also helped to design, construct and manage the ongoing needs of the garden.

The majority of the plants in the wholly organic Foodbank Community Garden were donated by local business and it has now become an airport oasis and a focal point for staff, volunteers and community engagement. With a bit of shade, table and chairs these raised garden beds grow food that is used in the community and training kitchens or for function room catering.

Watermelon, tomatoes, broccoli, silver beet, squash, chillies, and a wonderful herb garden of parsley, chives and basil fill the 10 beds, along with six citrus trees nearby. A drip feed irrigation system lies just beneath the planted goodies so there is no water wastage onto the concrete surrounds. The clever design of the beds mean they can also be easily accessed by elderly and disabled persons.
