Pre-Christmas travel surge at Perth Airport
Western Australians are taking full advantage of a Christmas with no border closures, with more than 420,000 passengers expected through Perth Airport in the next ten days.
This will push the December passenger figure to around 1.2 million – making it the busiest month since February 2020 and the busiest Christmas since 2019.
Perth Airport’s Acting Chief Executive Officer Kate Holsgrove says the Christmas buzz has returned to Perth Airport’s terminals.
“We are seeing strong passenger numbers across all of our terminals with regional, interstate and international travellers all making the most of a Christmas without travel restrictions,” Ms Holsgrove said.
“This is great news for both the aviation and tourism sectors as we are still recovering and rebuilding from the financial and operational impact of Covid-19.
“But with this much activity, there will inevitably be some delays in moving passengers through check-in and security.
“We’re asking all travellers to be patient and to understand everyone at the airport is going flat out to ensure you can get away on your holiday on time.
‘Security can’t be compromised so we’re asking passengers to think about what they are packing in their carry-on luggage to help avoid delays at the screening points
““Check-in counters will be busy too, so we’d suggest arriving 90 minutes before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight.
“We’ve been working with all of our airline and aviation services partners to ensure we’re well prepared for this intense period of activity.
“The reality is that like most businesses, the aviation sector has struggled to recruit to fill all of the vacant positions.
“But our aim is to get you on to your flight as quickly and as smoothly as possible.
“The airport’s top priority is to ensure the safety and security of passengers and visitors to the airport, which means security screening is an essential part of the travel routine.
“Make sure you pack any gifts that may be picked up in security screening in your checked in luggage. This could be soccer balls or NERF guns.
“There are many options to get to and from the airport now including Rideshare and Taxi services as well as the new Airport Central Train Station.
“There are also a number of parking options for those coming by car and we strongly urge travellers to pre-book on-line to take full advantage of the savings on offer.
“Over the last 12 months we have opened an additional 5,350 bays bringing the total capacity to more than 21,000 bays. This includes a new Short Term Saver car park next to T3 and T4 which has more than 850 bays. And don’t forget that all our Long-Term car parks have one hour free for those picking up friends and family.”
